I have not seen young people taking the initiative to start up new companies.. Including me, i feel young people don’t have the daring to have a start up and take the calculated risk. Thinking along the lines, what could be the reason for this……I am able to list down some of them:
Co-Founder
Are we able to find good partners to start a new firm. Are our friends also having the same level of thinking as we do. Frequency matches or not. I doubt so, most of us have the habit to settle down in life, get a job in a service sector industry and get monthly salary debited into your account, every first week of the month. Of course, it will give you the peace of mind you need. But is it what which is really needed? Having a partner will reduce the risk associated with starting a new business. The most important part is trusting your business partner. If you can do it, you will succeed. Finding good partners is an important asapect. Inshort, i feel that its necessary to have a partner, trustworthy to start a business.
Too Young and Too Inexperienced
Well, At the age of 21 -24, what you can expect a teenager to do. Going to college, enjoying college life, fooling around girls, spending time in college canteen with friends ….. Thats why we go to college, right?
Well my point is, at this age you are not mature enough to think about starting a company. Even if you think, you start planning about it, saying that i will start later, let me plan now. This is the time i need to learn, acquire knowledge. Thats fine…. But is it possible for me to work and still learn and acquire knowledge. Yes it is, but in Inida, its not happening the way it should have been. There are couple of correspondance courses available, after which you get a degree. But did you in some way or the other gained any knowledge. NO NO. So ultimately, it becomes to the fact that you are too young to start a company, and you feel so due to the above reasons.
Determination
Are you determined enough to start a business? Well, i dont know whether at the young age you are determined enough. In other words, you are not even smart enough to start a business at this age. you dont know anything about business at this time. You wont even read about it. You wont even get a chance to learn about it and worst, even hear about it.
Support
I believe that whenever you need to do something challenging, you need support. Well support can be from your family, girl friend, your friends, teachers…. Do we get enough support from them for starting a business. They will definitely support you in learning. But not for starting a business, because they are not confident. They see a lot of risks. Or may be they dont understand the business at all
Idea
Well well, coming to the most important part “IDEA”. I see an advertisement in TV all the time, its from a telephone operator “Idea”. It says, “An Idea can change your life“. Its true, An idea can change your life. As said, we need an idea to start up a business also. That idea can change as we move on with our business. We may invent new ideas, innovate based on the same idea. Then, thats how we should be doing it. The fact that we should have an idea to start with is the main bottle neck, if we think about start ups. Most of them think that, if we have an idea we need to stick with that for the life time. Give me a break dear, Its not so. We dont have to think about what happens to my idea after 10 years. No No, we should only think about near future. Because once we start the business, we are learning high from day to day life. You will be coming up with new ideas. Once you are in business, you may even feel that your idea was dumb. And later you may even innovate your existing idea or come up with an entirely new one. So if these fears can be removed, i think we are good to go.
Job is default, Expectations from family, afraid of commitments
Well, the title tells it all. When i start my schooling, its in my mind, that i need to do a job. Its a default option enabled in your mind. You cant even think other than that. From day one, you start thinking about which job i should choose, than what idea i should put in business. To add fuel, your family also has expectations that you should become a software engineer, or a doctor etc… These expectations sometimes becomes a pain for you that you strive hard to meet their expectations, than fulfilling your dreams. I am not getting into the debate whether its good or bad. Lets not divert from our topic. You may even be afraid about your commitments, you want to be a free bird in the initial stages of life. Its like marrying, having a business is going to eat up all my time, and needs more commitments.
Family Background
This is another factor, i have seen business men’s children getting involved in business at an early age. i feel that the family background is what is driving them into. Well, for them there is no risk at all. Still i havent seen them also starting a new business. Think about a middle class family, whose parents are in service sector, one a teacher and other an engineer. Dont you think their children will dare to start up a new company. They are not seeing such a culture from day one, they are seeing the same job culture their. i feel that this is a big hindrence.
Well, its all summarized here. There may be more reasons, which is holding people from thinking aloud and daring to start a business.
Hi, In my opinion (having done 3 start ups) to enjoy working in a start up is a combination of enjoying risk in business and a focus on creating value (and of course the money rewards). Most people want stability in their work and a steady income. Start ups don’t offer this type of environment, so I suppose if you are money driven (greedy) and are OK about risk and the ups and downs in business and life, then a start up could be the right route. Believe me, experience in the established business world is important, but so is the need to be greedy and management of risk.

Thanks Nick for the comments,
Well, you said it all. And good to see from some one with experience in the same field.
Its all about managing Risk, and how well you can calculate and accept the risk is the question.
I hope you have enjoyed with your start up’s.

Hi, In my opinion the educational system in India itself is not encouraging the idea of starting up a business. we have very few courses available here in indian universities which promote entrepreneurship. And speaking about the political situation in God own country(kerala) a normal man will never dare to start a firm by his own.

Thanks Joe for dropping by. I completely agree with you when you say about the system in Kerala, which is not business friendly, the same may be the case with Bengal. Education system is one factor, but as we discussed here, there are more on the same front, which is discouraging people from starting business.
